Wedding Rings

A wedding ring is worn every day. The collection is made to order in 18ct gold and platinum, with 9ct gold and palladium available across many styles, in widths from 1.8mm to 6mm, plain or set with diamonds, gemstones, or both.

The two largest decisions are width and profile. Width sits between roughly 1.8mm at the slimmest end — favoured for stacking against a slim engagement ring — and 6mm or more for a single statement band. Profile changes the way the ring meets the finger: a court profile is rounded on both inside and outside and tends to feel the most comfortable for everyday wear; a flat-court keeps the outer face flat but rounds the inside; a D-shape is flat inside, rounded outside. Most clients settle on a court or flat-court at 2.5mm to 4mm.

The collection includes plain bands, diamond-set bands (natural or lab-grown), two-colour bands, and gemstone-set styles in sapphire and emerald, with optional details: mill-grain edging, a bevelled outer edge, a centred groove, or a matt-satin finish. Every ring is hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office, finished by hand in our UK workshop, and supplied with the appropriate certification for any set stones. Internal engraving — initials, a date, a short line of text — is included on all wedding rings at no extra cost.

Couples usually arrive having spent more time on the engagement ring than on the wedding rings, and the decision tends to happen quickly once both partners are in the same room. Browse by metal if one partner has already decided; browse by width if the engagement ring is doing the visual work and the wedding ring should sit quietly beside it; browse by style if you'd like the two rings to share a thread of detail.

How wide should a wedding ring be?

Most UK wedding rings sit between 2.5mm and 4mm wide. Narrower bands at 1.8–2.2mm suit stackers and slim hands; wider bands of 5–6mm read as statement pieces and are more common for men's rings or single-band styling.

Width should be considered against the engagement ring. A delicate solitaire on a 1.8mm band tends to pair with a 1.8–2.2mm wedding band — anything thicker overpowers the engagement ring's profile. A wider engagement band, or a halo with significant shoulder detail, balances against a 2.5–3mm wedding ring. For men's wedding rings worn alone, 4–6mm is the most-ordered range, with 5mm being our single most popular width across both platinum and 18ct gold. Finger width and proportion matter more than any fixed rule — visiting our showroom or requesting a sizing kit will give a clearer answer than reading specifications alone.

Should our wedding rings match?

There is no rule. Roughly half of the couples we work with choose closely matched bands; the other half deliberately differ — different widths, different metals, sometimes one plain and one diamond-set — and the rings often work better as a pair for it.

Matching too closely can feel forced. The more practical question is whether one partner's day-to-day wear is harder on the ring — manual work, frequent gym use, hands in water — because that influences metal choice. Platinum tolerates daily wear better than 18ct gold; palladium sits between the two on hardness and is naturally white. If you're considering different metals between the two of you, try to keep the colour family consistent (both white-toned, or both warm-toned) so the rings read as connected when seen together. Many couples settle on the same metal and profile but different widths — a quietly correct way to acknowledge the asymmetry.

Platinum vs 18ct gold for wedding rings

Platinum is denser and harder to scratch, but the scratches it does pick up sit as patina rather than wear — the metal is displaced, not lost. 18ct gold scratches more visibly and slowly loses microscopic weight over decades of daily wear.

Platinum is also naturally white. 18ct white gold is rhodium-plated to achieve a similar colour, and the plating wears through every two to three years on a wedding ring, exposing the slightly warm undertone of the underlying alloy. Re-plating is a small workshop service and we offer it complimentary for the first three years on any white gold wedding ring purchased here. Yellow and rose gold are colour-stable and never need plating. Platinum costs more than 18ct gold for the same ring at current bullion prices; 9ct gold is the most affordable of the precious-metal options and is well-suited to plainer styles. For most clients the decision comes down to whether the maintenance cycle of white gold is acceptable, or whether platinum's higher initial price is preferred.

When should we order our wedding rings?

Order eight to ten weeks before the wedding date. Plain bands take four weeks in our workshop, diamond-set bands six, and the additional time buffer covers final sizing, any minor adjustments, and the chance to view the rings before the day.

If both partners can attend the same appointment, sizing together is faster and more accurate; we use a steel sizer in quarter sizes and re-check at delivery. Couples who order with less than six weeks before the wedding can usually still be accommodated for plain bands, though we may switch to a finished design from our small ready-to-ship inventory rather than make from scratch. Diamond-set bands genuinely need the full six to eight weeks because the stones are individually selected, set, and inspected. Once delivered, both rings are kept boxed and quality-checked until the wedding morning — we recommend not wearing them in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How long do made-to-order wedding rings take?

Plain bands take four weeks; diamond-set bands six weeks. We recommend ordering eight to ten weeks before the wedding date to allow time for sizing, minor adjustments, and a final viewing before the day. For tighter timelines we keep a small ready-to-ship inventory of common widths and metals — contact us with your sizes and we'll confirm same-day what's possible.

Is engraving included?

Yes. Internal engraving — initials, the wedding date, or a short personal line — is included at no extra cost on every wedding ring in this collection. Engraving is done after final sizing to ensure the position is correct on the band. We can also engrave on the outside surface where the design allows, though this is less common and may carry a small charge depending on complexity.

Can a wedding ring be resized later?

Most plain wedding rings can be resized one to two sizes up or down for a small workshop fee. Diamond-set bands are more constrained: half-set rings (stones across roughly half the band) can usually be resized, but full eternity-style wedding bands cannot be without compromising the setting. Resizing within the first year is complimentary on all rings. We always confirm feasibility before any work begins.

What's the difference between court, flat-court, and D-shape profiles?

Court is rounded on both the inside (where it meets the finger) and the outside surface — generally considered the most comfortable for daily wear. Flat-court has a flat outer face and a rounded inside, which sits flush with an engagement ring more readily. D-shape is flat inside and rounded outside, which is firmer to wear but holds its shape over time. Most clients choose court or flat-court.

Will my white gold ring stay white?

18ct white gold is rhodium-plated to achieve its bright white colour. Plating wears through over two to three years on a daily-wear ring, gradually exposing the slightly warmer underlying alloy. Re-plating restores the original colour and is a routine workshop service; we offer it complimentary for the first three years on any white gold wedding ring purchased from us. Platinum and palladium do not require plating.
