Round brilliant engagement rings at President Jewellers are made to order in our Hatton Garden workshop and hallmarked at the London Assay Office. Choose from solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three-stone and vintage settings in platinum or 18ct white, yellow or rose gold. Every ring is priced with a 1.0ct IGI-certified round centre stone — swap it for a natural diamond, fancy coloured diamond or gemstone from our inventory. Lead time 7 to 14 working days. Free lifetime resizing, free insured UK delivery.

Why round brilliant is the most-chosen engagement ring diamond

The round brilliant accounts for approximately 55% of engagement ring centre-stone orders at our Hatton Garden workshop, ahead of oval (22%) and cushion (10%). Three reasons drive that dominance. The 57-58 facet pattern calculated by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919 returns more brilliance and fire than any other shape — round is the highest-performing cut for light return. The circular profile flatters any finger shape and works with any setting style without geometric compromise. And round brilliants hold resale value better than non-round shapes because global demand is sustained. For couples wanting a safe, classic, light-rich outcome, round is the default.

How to choose a round brilliant diamond — the four spec rules our jewellers apply

The four rules that separate a well-cut round from a poorly-cut one:

  1. Cut grade. Round brilliants are the only diamond shape GIA awards an official cut grade to (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor). We recommend Excellent as the floor for an engagement ring centre stone. Excellent cut returns up to 30% more light than Very Good at the same carat weight, and it costs only marginally more.
  2. Polish and symmetry. Both should be Excellent or Very Good. Poor symmetry creates light leakage; poor polish creates a hazy face-up appearance.
  3. Colour. Round brilliants show colour less than oval, pear or marquise because of the symmetric facet arrangement. G colour reads white in any setting; H reads white in yellow or rose gold but may show faint warmth in platinum. We recommend G or better.
  4. Clarity. SI1 is the sweet spot — inclusions are not visible to the naked eye but the price is meaningfully lower than VS2. Avoid SI2 unless the inclusion location is white-clear in the table.

Setting styles available

Every setting style works with a round brilliant. The five most chosen at our Hatton Garden workshop:

  • Solitaire. The round mounted on a plain band with four or six prongs. Accounts for around 60% of round-brilliant orders. Cleanest profile; lets the diamond do all the work.
  • Halo. A ring of small diamonds (melee) surrounds the round centre, making the centre stone appear up to half a carat larger.
  • Hidden halo. The halo of melee sits under the centre stone, visible only from the side. The face-up reads as a clean solitaire with hidden sparkle.
  • Three-stone. The round centre flanked by two smaller diamonds or coloured stones. Symbolises past, present, future.
  • Vintage / Art Deco. Filigree shoulders, milgrain detail, or geometric cathedral mounts. Period-inspired but newly made in our workshop.

Metals and hallmarks

Every round brilliant engagement ring leaves our workshop with a London Assay Office hallmark. The four available metals:

  • 950 platinum — the most durable; holds polish for years; the heaviest on the hand. Most chosen with a round centre stone.
  • 18ct white gold — bright finish, lighter than platinum, requires re-rhodium plating every 2-3 years.
  • 18ct yellow gold — traditional and warm; maintains its colour without re-plating.
  • 18ct rose gold — pink hue from added copper; lower-maintenance than white gold.

9ct and 14ct gold are available on selected variants. Every hallmark includes our maker's mark, fineness mark (950 / 750 / 585 / 375), London Assay Office leopard's head and the date letter.

Pricing — what determines what a round brilliant engagement ring costs

The price of a round brilliant engagement ring at President Jewellers is driven by four factors: centre diamond carat weight (the largest single driver), centre diamond colour and clarity grade, metal choice (platinum costs more than 18ct gold), and accent stones (a pavé halo adds more than a plain solitaire band). Round brilliants cost approximately 25-35% more per carat than non-round shapes at equivalent spec because cutters lose more rough to achieve the 57-58 facet pattern. Every ring includes a 1.0ct IGI-certified round centre stone in the base price; swap it for a higher carat or different stone type and the original 1.0ct credit comes off, the new stone is added in.

Frequently asked questions

Are round brilliant diamonds more expensive?

Yes. Round brilliant diamonds cost approximately 25-35% more per carat than other shapes at equivalent colour and clarity. Two reasons: cutters lose around 60% of rough diamond weight to achieve the round brilliant's 57-58 facets, versus 30-50% for oval, cushion or emerald cut. And demand is highest for round, so price holds. A 1.0ct round in G/VS1 retails for roughly £4,500-£6,500 in the UK in 2026.

Is round brilliant a good diamond cut?

Round brilliant is the highest-performing diamond cut for light return. The 57-58 facets in the modern round brilliant were calculated by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919 to maximise the return of light to the eye. No other shape returns as much brilliance or fire. GIA awards Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor cut grades — we recommend Excellent cut as the floor for an engagement ring centre stone.

What is the most beautiful engagement ring shape?

Beauty is subjective, but round brilliant is the most-chosen engagement ring shape in the UK, accounting for approximately 55% of centre-stone orders at President Jewellers. Oval is second at around 22%, cushion third at 10%, with emerald, pear and the remaining shapes splitting the rest. The right shape for any wearer is the one they will love seeing on their hand for the next 50 years.

How much does a round brilliant cut diamond cost?

Round brilliant diamond prices in the UK in 2026 are approximately: 0.5ct G/VS1 around £1,500-£2,200; 1.0ct G/VS1 around £4,500-£6,500; 1.5ct G/VS1 around £10,000-£14,000; 2.0ct G/VS1 around £18,000-£26,000. Lab grown diamonds run 60-70% lower at the same spec. Every diamond we sell is GIA, IGI or HRD certified.

Why is the round brilliant cut so popular?

Three reasons. First, light return — the 57-58 facet pattern returns more brilliance and fire than any other shape. Second, universal flattery — round works on any finger shape and any setting style. Third, value retention — round brilliants hold resale value better than other shapes because demand is sustained globally. These three combined make round the default choice for couples who want a safe, classic outcome.

What setting styles work best with a round brilliant?

Every setting style works with a round brilliant centre stone. The most-chosen at our Hatton Garden workshop: solitaire (60% of round orders — clean four or six prong setting), halo (small diamonds surround the centre, adds apparent size), hidden halo (halo visible only from the side), three-stone (round flanked by two smaller diamonds or coloured stones), and vintage / cathedral mounts.

How much does a round brilliant engagement ring cost at President Jewellers?

Round brilliant engagement rings at President Jewellers range from approximately £1,200 for an 18ct gold solitaire with a 0.5ct round to £12,000-£18,000 for a 2.0ct platinum round with a diamond halo. The 1.0ct IGI-certified round centre stone is included in every base price; upgrades and downgrades are credited or charged at the difference. Every quote is itemised.
